Map Basics - What is a Map?

What is a Map?

What is a Map?

I guess we should start with a little summary of what a map is – back to school stuff for some of you, but bear with us, we’ll be brief.

A map is just an aerial drawing of the ground that you are about to explore on your adventure.  Whether you are walking, cycling, running or paddling, your map has all of the information you need to find your way across the land.  A good map will lay out all of the hills, paths, tracks, roads, streams, rivers, lakes, ponds, cliffs, crags and coastline together with some of the other non-natural features like mines, cairns (piles of stones), and buildings.

We've covered a range of map features to give you the confidence to use your map to find your own adventures.

You can follow us on social media and YouTube @FindYourADV for more updates and FYA BASICS – and don’t forget to use the comments section below to join the conversation, ask questions, and add your opinions and views – we want to hear from you!
