Map Basics - Map Scale

Map Scale

Map Scale

The map's scale gives you the information you need to establish how far a section of your route on the map is on the ground.

Typical map scales are 1:25,000, 1:40,000 and 1:50,000.  This means that every 1cm on a map represents 250m, 400m, and 500m on the ground.

We find that the 1:40k and 1:50k maps offer the best balance of detail versus area covered on a single sheet.

For really detailed route planning, you’ll want to get your hands on a map with 1:25k scale.
